C.T. Gabbert DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen

According to a recent report by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), most baby boomers, like their parents, are choosing to "age in place" at their current homes. And, in honor of Senior Independence Month, a local home design expert says there are several upgrades that can be made to make a home safe and enjoyable.

"We're finding that adults over 50 in the Peoria area are looking for ways to refresh their existing residence as opposed to moving into age-restricted communities," said Chuck Gabbert of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Peoria. "Today's mature population is more independent than ever, so they're bucking the trend of downsizing in favor of performing remodels that can last for years."

Gabbert, who oversees bath and kitchen remodeling projects across the Peoria area, is honoring Senior Independence Month, which takes place this February, with tips for modernizing outdated areas of the home. Gabbert says that many of the following remodels can actually perform double duty for seniors by upgrading both the look and accessibility of their living space:

* Create a walk-in pantry: Updating your current pantry into a walk-in variety will open the entire look of your kitchen. Additionally, it will maximize the amount of storage space, allowing you to keep a greater number of items within reach.
* Remove the tub: Old, ceramic tubs not only look outdated, but they can also present hurdles for older bodies trying to get in and out of them on a daily basis. Walk-in showers with glass doors look fresh and clean, and they can make your entire bathroom appear more spacious.
* Change the hardware: Replacing the knobs or drawer pulls on your cabinets can give them an entirely new look. Opt for ergonomic varieties that fit comfortably and naturally in your hands.
* Incorporate task lighting: With the help of pendant and recessed lights, dim work spaces can be transformed into the focal point of the room. Not only will this add another dimension to your space, but it will reduce eye strain as well.
* Scrap the wallpaper: Fresh paint and faux finishes are a must for the modern home, and they are the perfect replacement for wallpaper. Earth tones, including soft green palettes, are popular choices for both kitchens and baths. For a bolder statement, try accenting with rich purple or golden hues.

Gabbert adds that before completing any remodels, it is important for homeowners to assess which areas of the home are currently working or not working for them. If particular appliances or fixtures are difficult to maneuver or operate, they should be the first areas to receive an upgrade.

"The beauty about these types of remodels is that they add to the value of the home, which is another factor mature adults should be taking into consideration," said Gabbert. "Although they may not be willing to sell their house now, they will want to ensure that it has universal appeal when they are ready to put it on the market."
